Harrison Stringfellow wins appeal victory for Cumbrian holiday home
Liverpool practice Harrison Stringfellow has won approval, on appeal, for this holiday home on the Solway Coast in rural Cumbria.
Carlisle City Council had originally refused planning for the scheme at Boustead Hill, which sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
However, the firm appealed against the decision, and the proposal for a ‘family of three volumes arranged around a courtyard setting’ was subsequently waved through by the planning inspector.
As well as a main two-storey living and sleeping block, the designs feature a 1.5-storey snug and sleeping overspill space plus an ancillary storage structure.
According to the practice, the 0.1ha site is the last remaining part of the client’s ancestral family farm.
Describing the project, practice directors Su Stringfellow and Sarah Harrison said: ‘With no mains connections, the proposal is as self-sustaining as possible.
’The orientation and building arrangement capitalises not only on the views but allows for passive solar gain, optimal solar panel positioning and SUDS drainage.’
They added: ‘Bookended in local stone, the structures are wrapped in fibre-cement-profiled cladding and punctuated with deep-set windows set in framed surrounds.’
