Barr Gazetas has taken the wraps off its revamp of the historic Greenwich Market in London

The scheme aims to reinstate the market’s place within the town centre through improving the public realm and creating facilities for both visitors and market traders.

The practice has reclaimed an old service yard on the Greenwich Hospital-owned site to provide a new public space with a stainless steel pavilion and cast bronze sculpture.

The market’s entrance has also been restored while new retail units within a locally-listed Victorian banana warehouse have also been added.

Original solid panels within the market’s steel framed roof have been replaced with glass to bring light into the space.

Project director, Jon Eaglesham, said: ‘Like many London markets, Greenwich’s has a strong and unique character. After years of wear-and-tear due to popularity, it certainly required attention to make it to fit for the 21st century and beyond.

‘However, we knew it was vital to retain the spirit of the place and to resolutely protect the site’s heritage. Our designs are focussed on enhancing and rejuvenating the much-loved market. Designing a space that local residents, businesses and visitors will equally enjoy is a proven formula for creating a sustainable and prosperous community.’

The scheme is part of an ongoing four phase upgrade plan which began in 2014. The practice took over the job when contentious regeneration plans by Hopkins were dropped.
